Yes, I’m a nerd. But after drinking 3 beers with my Californian friend Kate, I have come a long way in thinking. I feel the need to document it.
First, all diversity conversations should begin with a posing of the question, “What is the difference between sympathy and empathy.” I am heavily influenced by Linguistic theory, and am very attended to Lakoff’s work on framing. That said, I’ll admit to having a hard time bifurcating them in practice. This acknowledgement came only after I made a substantial revelation. It may seem small, but it is nonetheless of import: People may express anger, fear, or sadness, may say hateful and disrespectful things, may verbally accost others…and that my negative reaction to this may be based solely on the spectrum of my preconceptions. While I hold that it still devalues their point to resort to an expression of aggression, it doesn’t make it any less real or manageable for them either. As Kate put it, “It’s supposed to be uncomfortable.”
I’ve been working toward that revelation since about 4th grade. I welcome its presence. I’m amazed that it took so long.
It was at that point I made another realization: we don’t all come to conclusions about race and class at the same rate of speed. Kate grew up in an area that was more tolerant, and her worldview facilitated her racial identity. My racial identity, having been tempered and homogenized a bit more, is more directly confronted. Nonetheless, it is important that I continue to progress in my thinking.
