Coburn Amendment fails

Daily Kos: Coburn Amendment, on the floor

There was a debate in the senate this evening over the Coburn amendment, which would transfer $454 million in funding from a pork barrel bridge in Alaska to the reconstruction efforts in New Orleans. The majority of our senators – Democrat or Republican – put their own greed above the nation’s interests.

The “Bridge to Nowhere” would connect an island, population 50, to the mainland. The cost of the bridge is greater than the amount it would cost to buy each island resident his or her own Lear jet. Some senators thought it might be a good idea to use the $454 million to rebuild New Orleans but, sadly, not a majority of them.

    Hey Jonthon,

    Nice black blog.

I can’t imagine what was happening with this ammendment. Off the cuff, it seems to me that the Alaskan bridge involves some serious log-rolling. I wonder which electorally important states have contractors that have a role in building the bridge.

Way to go getting Edwards’ autograph. I sometimes wonder whether his star is still rising or whether the 2004 election was his 15 seconds…
