FT.com / World / US – Hurricane raises fears of global energy crisis

Some analysts cut US growth forecasts, saying soaring petrol prices would hurt consumer spending. “US [petrol] prices are now in the process of the most dramatic spike ever seen,” said Kevin Norrish, an analyst at Barclays Capital. “It is now appropriate to talk of a major energy crisis.”

The looting is out of hand, so I have heard. If I were there, I would certainly want a beer, too.

Bush Compares Pearl Harbor to 9/11 Attacks – Los Angeles Times

// August 30th, 2005

Bush is now comparing the War in Iraq to WWII. Give me a break.

I find it particularly offensive that we as a nation whitewashed the anniversary of Vietnam, choosing to focus instead on a RUNAWAY BRIDE instead. Now, when it pleases him, Bush references a totally dissimilar war.

For instance, we were very hesitant to enter the fray of WWII. Our reticence cost the Allies thousands of lives. However, as this wasn’t our war, any assistance we gave was considered a donation – and in that instance, it was a donation that I still believe did the world much good.

In this conflict, we immediately rushed to war after being attacked, just as President Bush said. We rushed right to Afghanistan, put hardly any troops on the ground, and didn’t kill Osama bin Laden. Then we scuttled off to Iraq for a completely unrelated war. Instead of hesitating, we started a war. Now we’re blowing up hospitals and schools, killing innocent people, and losing a conflict because our leader has advised our troops to “stay the course” – a course that wasn’t working in the first place.

We will now sit by and witness the creation of a great Islamic theocracy. The kurds in the North and the Shias in the South will succeed in their effort to bully out the minority Sunni population, then will team up with Iran (also Shia) and the part of Saudi Arabia that has all the oil (also Shia). Then, they’ll have about 70% of OPEC’s oil supply, and we will have a real problem on our hands.

There is one cogent similarity between this war and WWII – both Reagan and Bush were fond of vacations, having taken the most and second-most, respectively, of any president, ever.

Fuck that.

Who’s to blame?

// August 30th, 2005

A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and
spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted, “Excuse me, can
you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t
know where I am.”

The woman below replied, “You’re in a hot air balloon hovering approximately
30 feet above the ground. You’re between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude
and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude.”

“You must be enlisted,” said the balloonist.

“I am,” replied the woman, “How did you know?”

“Well,” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is
technically correct, but I’ve no idea what to make of your information, and
the fact is I’m still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help at all. If
anything, you’ve delayed my trip.”

The woman below responded, “You must be an Officer.”

“I am,” replied the balloonist, “but how did you know?”

“Well,” said the woman, “you don’t know where you are or where you’re going.
You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made
a promise, which you’ve no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath
you to solve your problems. The fact is, you are in exactly the same
position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it’s my fault.”

Drudge Retort: Killed Soldier Questioned ‘Fucktarded’ War Plan

What the fuck has my chain of command been doing? We were winning somewhat when I left. And now we’re being pinned down in our own fucking homes? Insurgents are pushing locals out of their homes and taking over my area at will? What kind of fucktarded plan have we been half-assedly executing? Obviously the kind that neglects sound contact with locals. Obviously the kind that gives further distance to unbridged gaps between soldiers and locals. Obviously the kind that has shown enough weakness when confronted by the insugency that it has been encouraged to grow.

Drudge Retort: McCain Backs ‘Intelligent Design’

Well, I am no longer in support of McCain. I used to say I would vote over him before Hillary, but that is no longer the case.
