In South America, democracy stumbles in second act

// April 28th, 2005

While this author clearly sees democracy as the answer, and I am inclined to agree, the abuses of power present in those countries are very representative of what we experience here, today. It turns out, corruption can kill any good thing, even democracy, and without a keen focus on those who suffer, all governing systems seem doomed to fall apart.

Chavez Explains End of Military Program

// April 28th, 2005

I almost feel bad for the Venezuelan president, who is now a likely target for a coup de grace. And none of us will ever know about this, an aggregious example of our tax dollars at work.

PBS Scrutiny Raises Political Antennas (washingtonpost.com)

// April 22nd, 2005

Those who cannot afford cable, as well as those who prefer public broadcast, have not voiced any concerns regarding bias in PBS’s programming. Nonetheless, the organization is being vilified, reprimanded, and forced to change its content.
For a moment, let us consider that the reason the media currently appears more liberal (if they do at all), is because the POLITICAL SPECTRUM has shifted to the right. I would then hold that for the media to appear to the left would not only be acceptable, but desireable. I see this effort as shameless viewpoint discrimination, but I’m sure Republicans will have a bullshit “iron” defense (i.e., disregarding my concerns, offering no facts to support their claims, and brining up unrelated examples in an effort to get off the subject).
PBS Scrutiny Raises Political Antennas (washingtonpost.com):
“A senior FCC official, who would not speak for attribution because he must rule on issues affecting public broadcasting, went further, saying CPB ‘is engaged in a systematic effort not just to sanitize the truth, but to impose a right-wing agenda on PBS. It’s almost like a right-wing coup. It appears to be orchestrated.’
In an interview yesterday, CPB board chairman Ken Tomlinson called such comments ‘paranoia,’ and said critics of CPB’s initiatives should ‘grow up.’ ”

Throw them all in jail

// April 21st, 2005

Police State in the USA? A recent dragnet effort turned out to be the largest ever. Our jails were already above capacity…Either some of the old criminals will have to be let go, or maybe we could let some plant-burners out?
