Someone hand these people a copy of 1984

// February 11th, 2005

Our representatives have recently voted to issue a national ID with electronic strips and a shared database. I’m patently scared. Big Brother was only 21 years late…=(

What will it take to get the American populace to pay attention, take offense, and act for change? Looks like this administration is hell-bent on finding out.
House backs major shift to electronic IDs

Hey, you know what would be cool? If we made grade school kids walk around with tracking devices similar to those used to track livestock. Wait, actually, this is so offensive at its very core that it is unexcusable. Good thing the tail is wagging the dog, or we might stand up and demand they respect our right to privacy and the basic tenets of a free democracy. FUCK. Please tell all your friends.

I want to find the businessman who first said “we could put it under the skin” and strangle him with a monkey wrench. Implanting a subdural transmitter has to be something that exists only in the worst of most people’s nightmares. Unless you praise and worship the almighty dollar, that is.

Despite Proposed Cuts, Bush Budget Is Bigger

He said they had weapons, but they did not.
He said he’d half the deficit, but he raised it instead.
He says he’s a compassionate conservative, but that was just for show and votes.

They may demonize me, call me a liberal, ignore or rebut my words…but I’ll keep saying it until they acknowledge the facts and truth.

World Tribune.com — New non-lethal weapon lets troops microwave hostile crowds

They’ve built a ray that makes your skin feel like it is burning. It will allow them to non-lethally attack crowds.

I’m sure they’d never abuse that power, or use it here, though…

10 steps to create an enemy

// February 3rd, 2005

I decided to take a drink of Guiness Stout every time the audience applauded last night. Thus drunk and understandably dispassioned, I listened to an Antiflag song that is still (sadly) applicable:

10 easy steps to create an enemy and start a war
Listen closely because we will all see this weapon used in our lives.
It can be used on a society of the most ignorant to the most highly educated.
We need to see their tactics as a weapon against humanity and not as truth.
First step: Create the enemy. Sometimes this will be done for you.
Second step: Be sure the enemy you have chosen is nothing like you. Find obvious differences like race, language, religion, dietary habits and fashion. Emphasize that their soldiers are not doing a job, they are heartless murderers who enjoy killing!
Third step: Once these differences are established continue to reinforce them with all disseminated information.
Fourth step: Have the media broadcast only the ruling party’s information. This can be done through state run media. Remember, in times of conflict all for-profit media repeats the ruling party’s information. Therefore all for-profit media becomes state-run.
Fifth step: Show this enemy in actions that seem strange, militant, or different. Always portray the enemy as non-human, evil, a killing machine.
Sixth step: Eliminate opposition to the ruling party. Create an “Us versus Them” mentality. Leave no room for opinions in between. One that does not support all actions of the ruling party should be considered a traitor.
Seventh step: Use nationalistic and/or religious symbols and rhetoric to define all actions.
This can be achieved by slogans such as “freedom loving people versus those who hate freedom.” This can also be achieved by the use of flags.
Eighth step: Align all actions with the dominant deity. It is very effective to use terms like, “It is god’s will” or “god bless our nation.”
Ninth step: Design propaganda to show that your soldiers have feelings, hopes, families, and loved ones. Make it clear that your soldiers are doing a duty; they do not want or like to kill.
Tenth step: Create an atmosphere of fear and instability, and then offer the ruling party as the only solutions to comfort the public’s fears. Remember – the fear of the unknown is always the strongest fear.
THIS IS HOW TO CREATE AN ENEMY! THIS IS HOW TO START A WAR!
THIS IS HOW TO CREATE AN ENEMY!
We are not countries. We are not nations.(enemy)
We are not religions. We are not gods. We are not weapons. We are not ammunition. (enemy) We are not killers. We will NOT be tools.
Mother fuckers
I will not die
I will not kill
I will not be your slave
I will not fight your battles
I will not die on your battlefields
I will not fight for your wealth
I am not a fighter
I am a human being!!!

Make them represent for the plant!

// February 2nd, 2005

I spent about an hour and a half writing a letter to my state rep and senator in an effort to get favorable legislation concerning my plant introduced.  I figure the effort can be shared, so I removed all the personal information and am including the letter below.  PLEASE CUT, COPY, PERSONALIZE, AND SEND!  Also, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions!

(Your representative)
(Your representative’s address)

Dear (Your representative’s title and name):

            I am writing this letter to express a concern and request your assistance.  To be very direct, I am a marijuana user, and a proud one at that.  I do not feel that the cannabis plant is dangerous, and I do not feel that it has any effect on mental capacity.  Obviously, I felt vindicated when the city of Columbia resoundingly decided that students like me should not lose federal funding due to first-time possession of a plant and subsequent arbitrary booking procedures.  I also was pleased to see that my fellow Columbians were not opposed to sick people obtaining medicine a doctor would prescribe to them.

I’m sure you are aware of the nuances of and vote count for proposition 1 and 2, but I feel the above details were warranted.  I feel this way because many legislators within the state seem to misunderstand the laws that have been passed, and are seeking to economically sanction the city as a whole for voicing our opinion via democratic election.  I will go as far as to say that the city of Columbia seems to be facing an embargo, and this saddens me because I don’t think the laws we passed warrant this, or were understood.  The national reaction has been unfavorable and misleading as well.

            Any and all effort on your part to correct these false impressions, to represent the will of voters in your state, and to push for reform of inane drug laws will be noticed, applauded, and remembered.  I realize the political implications regarding this matter are significant (which also frustrates me).  I will spare you my thoughts on possible social, economic, democratic, and other benefits that would result from any amount of reform, but I would greatly appreciate any help airing any and all of these commonly-held viewpoints in my government.  I may be the moral minority, but that doesn’t mean I am wrong, or alone.

            In closing, I’d like to recommend that you sponsor a bill for the statewide legalization of medical marijuana.  Of all of the battle fronts, I feel this is the most defensible, and arguments against it carry a definite amoral undertone: Sick patients need it, Qualified doctors want to prescribe it, stubborn government disallows it.  I think that an unbiased survey of the state would find that the majority of people are at least not opposed to this effort, and your actions on our behalf could lessen the suffering and frustration of thousands of citizens in this state.

Appreciatively,

(Your name)

(Your address – so they realize that you are indeed one of their constituents)
