Tonight I went over to my friend Amanda's house to watch Edward Scissorhands. She had never seen it, and although I own it and even have a poster hanging on my wall, it had been quite a while since I had watched it. I have a certain admiration for all of Tim Burton's work, but especially Ed Sciz. The dark and symbolic sets are so intricately and purposefully designed. He moved toward claymation and animation surely because reality offered too many constraints to his artistic vision...but in Edward Scissorhands, the reality combined with the effect brings an added layer of emotion to it, I guess. When the mother walks into the dark old house in her purple avon suit and 50's style red hair...when Ed carves ice sculptures...when he kills the boyfriend in a simple slip of the fingers...there's a ceratin magic in the cinematography of it that I'll just always love.

It's also a cogent reminder that the point of life is not happiness, nor should it be.
