I worked Big Free from 11 until midnight thirty tonight. I set up tents, drove golf carts, set up the stage and helped out wherever needed until the show started at 4, at which point I became security for the Derby stage (as opposed to the smaller Springfest stage, as we are cool enough to have two). Twista's performance was really impressive, and though I'd heard his albums and about his ability to rap ultra-fast, actually seeing him do it was really impressive.
But not as impressive as the Urge. They agreed to do a reunion concert, and it was stellar. I spent most of the evening trying to watch them while simultaneously catching crowd surfers as they rolled in with the tide. After playing an extensive set, all the members left the stage but the guitarist. He remained, performing an 8-minute solo that was stellar. But then...the other five members came back. I started laughing, and Steve Ewing (lead singer) saw me, smiled, and pointed at me. I pointed right back. During the next song, Jump Right In, he actually came over and stood on the speaker next to me, and we pumped fists together, then high-fived. It was...awesome. At one point, the drummer went into about an 8-minute solo, some of which was one-handed. The crowd was more or less behaved (as an Urge show goes), though the mosh pit looked really rough. All in all...a great experience.
